I have a client who is a single mom and has gone through nursing school and now has her degree, but had trouble passing the NCLEX exam. She is wanting to enroll in a prep course to help her study so she can retake it, but the only one she is aware of costs $500 and isn't eligible for financial aid. Does anyone know of any assistance programs or prep courses that would be eligible for financial aid? I encouraged this client to apply for TANF assistance (she was hesitant because she believed she would have to do "community service" for 30 hours a week). I told her that education can count towards work/training so she is especially motivated to get this done so she can get some supplemental assistance in the meantime. Also, TANF supportive services could pay for her to take the exam once she finished the prep course, but will not pay for the course itself.
Any help/guidance anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated!

Jess- I called ICC and left a message w/ their director of nursing to see if she had any ideas about financial help for the prep class. Do you know where the client went to nursing school? Maybe if we knew that we could contact the school to see what is offered. ICC has grants sometimes that will help w/ students, but w/out knowing if she went through ICC I can't speak to them about possible grant monies. Let me know! Thanks!

Thank you Toby!! This client got her nursing degree in Indiana, but I'm not sure which school exactly. I can find out if you think it would help?

I am not sure about grants through her school in Indiana and advocacy would be harder for us to navigate. I was hoping it was ICC or one of the hospitals, so we could contact staff who might be willing to lead us towards a solution.

Toby-did you ever hear back from the ICC Director of Nursing?

Yes. She knows of no resources at this time to help this student, who received her license out of state. I think she should contact her nursing school to see if they have any help to pay for the prep class. Sorry I didn't get back to you. I'm glad you touched base. My apologies, Jess.

No apology needed! Just wanted to check in I talked to the client about receiving some TANF funds and saving those to pay for the course. TANF will potentially pay for the actual test separately.

I hope she can save money for the course, as it does not appear she will get help paying for it. I'm glad TANF will pay for the test. That is the good news!

Update: I met a gal from St Francis College of Nursing at the Hoop it Up! Event at Taft Homes this weekend, and she was able to give me the names of a couple of faculty members who do free tutoring for board prep. They even offer this service for folks who aren't current students at the College of Nursing! I called the client and gave her that info and she is going to pursue those services.
