I have shared legal guardianship of my 5 year old son. I want him to get counseling but my ex does not. Can I consent to my son attending the counseling, or does my ex need to also give their consent?

Hi Paul! I can't give legal advice because I am not an attorney, but generally speaking you could look to your custody order for the answer to your questions. Sometimes custody orders will spell out who makes final medical decisions. If there isn't something spelled out, take a look at this link: illinoislegalaid.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.dsp_Content&contentID=7882#a=intro for information about modifying/changing custody. Also, Prairie State Legal Services telephone counseling hotline is open Monday-Thursday 9am-2pm and is staffed with attorneys who can give you specific answers to your legal questions if you qualify for their services. The number to reach them is 1-800-531-7057.

I sent an email on the Illinois Legal Aide website re. Paul's issue and received a response that they could not give legal advice, but can only try to give me contact info for attorneys in my area. Seems that the thing to do would be to contact PSLS for legal advice, yes?
